On arrival in Souillac, you’ll be transferred to your hotel, with check-in available from 4:00pm. Set along the banks of the Dordogne River, Souillac is a charming town to explore on foot, with its striking abbey church, traditional architecture and inviting local shops. If you’ve chosen the upgraded option, you’ll stay at a 5-star château located approximately 10 minutes from Souillac, offering peaceful river views and a touch of luxury to begin your journey.

A short transfer takes you to Rouffillac, a castle overlooking the Dordogne valley. From this starting point, you’ll set out on foot through rolling countryside, passing through woodlands and farmland dotted with stone farmhouses. Today’s trail winds through the heart of the Sarladais, a region of dense oak forests known as the Périgord Noir – named for the deep green-black of its trees and the prized black truffles that grow beneath them. Often called the "black diamond" of the Périgord, these earthy delicacies are a proud symbol of the area’s rich culinary heritage. The day ends in Sarlat, the cultural and historical capital of the region. With its cobbled streets, golden stone buildings and lively atmosphere, Sarlat is a town best explored slowly – and preferably with a stop at one of its famed food markets or cafés.

Meals:  B,D

A day to discover Sarlat, one of France’s most beautifully preserved towns. Built from warm golden limestone, Sarlat boasts the highest concentration of Medieval and Renaissance architecture in the country. Simply wandering its narrow cobbled lanes feels like stepping back into the 12th century. You can enjoy a pleasant 1.5km loop walk (approx. 2 hours including stops) through the historic centre and its surroundings, soaking up the atmosphere, street life, and architectural details. If you're visiting on a Wednesday or Saturday, be sure to explore the bustling morning market – a lively showcase of local produce and artisan goods. For those wanting to stretch their legs further, a scenic 10km loop (around 2.5 hours) leads you out of town towards Campagnac Château and through quiet countryside. You may wish to include a side trip to the famous Lascaux Caves – a fascinating window into prehistoric art and early human creativity.

Meals:  B

Start today along peaceful, shaded paths bordered by oak and chestnut trees. As you descend into the valley, the landscape opens up to reveal one of the region’s true highlights – the riverside village of Beynac-et-Cazenac. Classified among one of the most beautiful villages of France, Beynac is a picture-perfect settlement of golden stone houses clustered along the banks of the Dordogne River. Towering above it all is the imposing 12th-century château, a remarkably well-preserved medieval fortress that once stood as a stronghold in the Hundred Years’ War. Take time to explore the cobbled lanes, soak in the panoramic views from the castle ramparts, and enjoy the slow rhythm of life in this extraordinary village steeped in history and charm.

Meals:  B,D

Today’s walk takes you deep into the heart of the Dordogne Valley – often described as the jewel of the Périgord. This stretch of countryside is famous for its dramatic scenery, where thick forested hills frame the winding river and majestic medieval castles rise proudly from clifftops. You may choose to stop at La Roque-Gageac, a village nestled between the cliffs and the riverbank. Here, you can enjoy a ride on a traditional flat-bottomed gabarre, once used to transport goods along the Dordogne. It’s a relaxing way to see the landscape from a new perspective. From here, continue your walk up to Domme, a beautifully preserved fortified bastide perched high above the valley. With its honey-coloured buildings, arched gateways and hilltop promenade, Domme has outstanding panoramic views over the Dordogne River and is also classified as one of the most beautiful villages in France. Take time to explore the town’s charming lanes, or descend into its caves beneath the main square before enjoying this evenings meal.

Meals:  B,D

The trail continues through the spectacular landscapes of the Dordogne River Valley, a region where natural beauty and rural charm unfold at every turn. The trail weaves through a tapestry of rolling farmland, quiet oak woodlands and sleepy hamlets. A highlight of the day is the dramatic first glimpse of the Château de Montfort, rising above the cliffs with commanding views over the valley. This fairy tale-like fortress, with its round towers and storied past, is one of the Dordogne’s most photogenic spots.

Meals:  B,D

A longer but easier walk than yesterday as the trail closely follows the curves of the Dordogne River. This stage is a true showcase of the region’s charm, with sweeping river views, fertile farmland, and the kind of scenery that defines the Dordogne – from limestone cliffs to golden-hued villages nestled among the trees. Small hamlets and riverside towns are perfect for lunch or a coffee stop. The route leads you back to Souillac for your overnight stay.

Meals:  B

Trip concludes after breakfast with a transfer to the train station.
