Trip highlights

  • Discovering two of Europe's most fascinating capital cities
  • Experiencing the gorgeous lake district of Germany
  • The ferry crossing from Rostock to the white cliffs of Møn Island
  • Cycling the final leg along the coast to downtown Copenhagen

The contrasts between northern Germany and Denmark don't begin right at the border, but you'll certainly notice them on this cross border cycling trip. From Germany's vibrant, culturally rich and exciting capital of Berlin, you'll cycle north to the coast via forests and lakes, hopping from glistening island to island, towards the Danish capital of Copenhagen. The route takes you along canals, through scenic coastal stretches and shady forest tracks. On occasion you will need to catch local trains and also a ferry to Denmark. Germany's scattered lakes, peaceful wetlands and emerald forests provide a wonderful start for the cycling ahead. The Danish landscapes are vibrant in contrast, changing from cliff-lined coasts to white sandy beaches and where picturesque fishing villages alternate with majestic palaces and gorgeous manor-houses further inland.

Make your own way to Oranienburg and your joining hotel. There’s a direct and convenient S-Bahn connection between central Berlin (Berlin-Mitte) and Oranienburg, making the journey simple to navigate.

Meals:  Nil

Today you cycle the Oder Havel Canal to the town of Liebenwalde, where a former prison now houses a local museum. Continue pedalling beside the canal to Zehdenick, known for its pink town hall and relaxed riverside setting. Just outside town, the Mildenberg Brickworks Park offers a fascinating glimpse into Europe’s industrial past. Overnight in or near Zehdenick or Fürstenberg. +156m/-135m

Meals:  B

The Mecklenburg Lake District begins at the "Great Stechlin", immortalised in literature by Theodor Fontane. Cycling to Neustrelitz you will pass a number of smaller and larger lakes, before reaching Neustrelitz – once the royal seat of the Grand Duchy of Strelitz. Take time to explore the baroque town layout, the star-shaped market square and the elegant castle park. Overnight in or near Neustrelitz.

Meals:  B

One of the trip’s highlights is cycling through Müritz National Park – Germany’s largest terrestrial national park – home to over 130 lakes nestled among forests and wetlands. It’s a haven for birdlife and rare plant species. Along the way, stop in the village of Ankershagen, childhood home of Heinrich Schliemann, the man who uncovered ancient Troy. His story is brought to life in the local museum. Continue on to the lakeside spa town of Waren/Müritz for your overnight stay.

Meals:  B

Pedal through the quiet woodlands of Nossentiner Heide National Park, making your way to Krakow am See – a peaceful lakeside town surrounded by forest and farmland. From here, continue to Güstrow, known as the home of expressionist artist Ernst Barlach. This afternoon, take time to wander the charming old town or visit Barlach’s former studio. Overnight in or near Güstrow.

Meals:  B

Today’s ride follows the scenic Bützow-Güstrow Canal, passing through a mix of tranquil countryside, meadows and small villages on your way north. If you'd prefer a shorter ride or want more time to explore the city, you can opt to take a local train to Rostock at any point along the way (tickets not included, payable locally). Once a key member of the Hanseatic League which began as a collection of loosely associated groups of German traders and towns aiming to expand their commercial interests, including protection against pirates. Rostock is now a lively university town with a charming old harbour, brick Gothic architecture and a vibrant cafe scene. Overnight in Rostock.

Meals:  B

Begin the day with a 12km/7.4mi ride to Rostock harbour, where you’ll board the ferry to Gedser on the Danish island of Falster. The two-hour crossing (ticket included) takes you across the Baltic Sea, offering a chance to relax and enjoy the views. Once ashore, continue cycling through Denmark’s peaceful rural landscapes – a mix of dikes, coastal stretches, quiet villages, and pockets of woodland. Your destination is Nykøbing, the island’s main town, known for its harbourfront charm, cosy streets and local museums. Overnight in Nykøbing.

Meals:  B

Follow the scenic coastline on flat, easy terrain to the historic merchant town of Stubbekøbing. Take time to explore its charming harbour and old-world atmosphere before boarding the ferry to the island of Møn (ticket not included, payable locally). The short crossing includes a stop at Bogø before reaching Møn, where you’ll cycle quiet country lanes past thatched-roof cottages and open farmland. If weather permits, you might like to stop at one of the Baltic Sea’s peaceful beaches for a swim or picnic. Alternatively, skip the ferry and take the land route via Vordingborg and Kalvehave. Overnight in the town of Stege, Møn’s main settlement.

Meals:  B

After crossing the bridge from Møn to Zealand, continue north through coastal landscapes passing cottages, country and manor houses, surrounded by farmland. Fakse Ladeplads is approx. 55 km away, and Rødvig with its fascinating cliffs approx. 75 km. If you are booked to stay overnight in Rødvig, you will have reached your destination. If you are booked to stay in Køge, you can take the train from either Fakse or Rødvig (train ticket not included, payable locally). Or you can cycle to Køge in which case the distance is 107km/66.8mi. Overnight in Rødvig or Køge.

Meals:  B

Your final cycling day takes you along the coast to Denmark’s capital. If you stayed overnight in Rødvig, you’ll ride approx. 75km, with the route following sandy beaches and seaside towns. Near Højerup, pause at the village church for sweeping views over the dramatic chalk cliffs of Stevns Klint. From Køge (approx. 41km to Copenhagen), history enthusiasts may enjoy a stop at the Køge Town Archive Museum. Further along the route, art lovers can detour to the ARKEN Museum of Modern Art in Ishøj – known for its striking architecture and contemporary exhibitions. Finish your journey in Copenhagen, a vibrant city that blends old-world charm with modern style. Take time to visit the famous Tivoli Gardens or explore the canals and cobbled streets of the historic harbour district.

Meals:  B

Your trip ends after breakfast this morning. If you’d like to extend your stay in Copenhagen, we can arrange additional nights on request – just ask us for details. Please note: extra nights are not possible with bike rental.
