Trip highlights

  • Cycle the scenic path of the former Dolomite Railway, enjoying gentle gradients and incredible views
  • Explore South Tyrol’s unique blend of Austrian and Italian culture
  • Visiting Cortina d'Ampezzo and Treviso
  • Soaking up the traditions and culture of the Dolomites and northern Italy
  • Enjoying the hospitality of family run hotels

There is no mountain region more suited to the leisure cyclist than the Dolomites, with its gentle gradients, dedicated cycle routes, and breathtaking alpine scenery. Once traversed by rail, the old Dolomite Railway now forms part of a purpose-built path that winds through quiet valleys, alongside sparkling streams, and beneath jagged limestone peaks. It’s a ride that feels both manageable and exhilarating — perfect for travelers seeking a slower, more immersive way to explore the region. Starting beneath the soaring spires of the Three Peaks (Tre Cime di Lavaredo), this journey takes you through a part of Italy that’s as culturally layered as it is scenic. Germanic and Italian influences blend in the Südtirol, where Tyrolean villages, hearty alpine cuisine, and baroque churches reveal the region’s cross-border heritage. As you descend from the mountains, the terrain softens into wooded foothills and green valleys, bringing you to the hometown of Renaissance painter Titian and into the valley of Italy’s famed gelato makers. These lesser-known corners of northern Italy are full of charm — from the medieval streets of Feltre to the elegant piazzas of Bassano del Grappa. Further south, Asolo — the “city of a hundred horizons” — offers sweeping views and artistic pedigree, while Treviso, a stylish town laced with canals and frescoed facades, hints at your journey’s end. The journey ends on the land side of Venice, a city like no other, where your cycling adventure meets centuries of maritime history and architectural wonder. With mostly downhill or gently rolling terrain, a well-planned route using quiet backroads and cycle paths, and a gradual transition from alpine to Adriatic, this trip showcases the full spectrum of northern Italy’s natural and cultural landscapes. It’s ideal for leisure cyclists who want more than a challenge — who want connection, beauty, and variety with every turn of the pedals.

Today’s ride follows the old Dolomites railway trail, a scenic route steeped in history. Pedal past Lake Dobbiaco (Toblacher See) and the War Cemetery, a solemn reminder of World War I. Shortly after, take in the breathtaking panorama of the Three Peaks (Tre Cimi), one of the most iconic sights in the Dolomites, before reaching the emerald-green Lake Landro (Dürrensee). A short climb brings you to the border between South Tyrol and Belluno, marking your descent into the heart of the Dolomites. From here, enjoy a comfortable downhill ride to Cortina d’Ampezzo, often called the "Pearl of the Dolomites," surrounded by stunning alpine peaks. Take time to explore the town centre, a stylish alpine retreat where chic cafés, stunning mountain views, and a touch of Italian glamour create an unforgettable atmosphere. +350m/1148ft, -300m/984ft

Meals:  B

Today’s route mostly follows a gradual downhill path along the old Dolomite railway line. Ride past the Sorapis mountain group and the rugged rock formations of Cinque Torri (“Five Towers”) as you descend through the scenic Boite Valley to Calalzo di Cadore. From here, follow a newer cycling route to Longarone, a town rebuilt after the devastating 1963 Vajont Dam disaster. The final stretch takes you through gently rolling terrain into Belluno, a small but lively provincial capital with mountain views and Renaissance architecture. +200m / +656ft, -1000m / -3281ft

Meals:  B

Depart Belluno on tree-lined avenues and quiet backroads as you cycle through tranquil countryside dotted with small, picturesque villages. The surrounding foothills of the southern Dolomites frame your ride, offering striking views as you make your way to the historic hill town of Feltre, known for its medieval heart and Venetian-style buildings. +280m / +919ft, -400m / -1312ft

Meals:  B

Today’s ride begins with a relaxed stretch before descending into the Brenta Valley, where alpine landscapes give way to the Veneto plains. Be sure to explore the charming old town, with highlights including the Civic Museum, San Francesco Church, and the vibrant Piazza della Libertà. +200m / +656ft, -350m / -1148ft

As you leave the Alps behind, the landscape softens into the plains of Veneto, leading you to Treviso, a picturesque city known for its canals, fashion, and vibrant atmosphere. Along the way, admire the grandeur of Palladian villas, masterpieces of the renowned architect Andrea Palladio, built during Venice’s golden age as a dominant European sea power. +280m / +919ft, -400m / -1312ft
