Over 11 days cycling, this 580km trail takes you from the windswept northern plains of Groningen all the way to the limestone hills of Limburg, gradually experiencing the changing landscapes and regional cultures of the Netherlands. Each stage brings a growing sense of progress as the kilometres accumulate and the scenery evolves from open farmland and heathlands to wooded hills and river valleys. Along the way your luggage is transferred daily, allowing you to enjoy the cycle while relaxing in the comfort of welcoming hotels each evening.

Make your way to the small village of Pieterburen, located in the far north of the Netherlands near the Wadden Sea. Known for its quiet rural setting and as the official starting point of the Pieterpad, it’s a peaceful introduction to the journey ahead. After settling into your accommodation, you may wish to stretch your legs on an optional 10km / 6.2mi loop towards the Wadden Sea dyke, where wide open skies and coastal landscapes define the region.

Meals:  Nil

Begin at the historic Pieterpad starting point in Pieterburen, your ride begins along the sea dyke, with wide views over the Wadden Sea and distant islands. You then head south through small settlements and open farmland, entering the distinctive Wierden landscape where villages sit on low mounds above the plains. Following quiet paths and waterways, you cycle through one of the Netherlands’ oldest cultural landscapes along the Reitdiep. The day finishes in the lively university city of Groningen, where historic buildings and a vibrant atmosphere mark a contrast to the rural start.

Meals:  B

Leaving the city behind, you follow the scenic Drentsche Aa river through a mix of lakes, woodlands and gentle ridges. The route passes through traditional villages such as Zuidlaren, before continuing into the province of Drenthe. Your day ends in Assen, known for its green surroundings and cultural sites, including museums and nearby prehistoric landscapes.

Meals:  B

Today you cycle through the rural heart of Drenthe. Passing through Rolde, you’ll encounter ancient hunebedden (megalithic tombs), some of the oldest monuments in the Netherlands. Continuing through forests and heathlands in the “Heart of Drenthe”, you may choose to visit the open-air museum in Schoonoord. Your destination is Coevorden, a historic fortified town near the German border, with a star-shaped layout, castle and long trading history.

Meals:  B

Today’s ride follows quiet paths through the valley of the Overijsselse Vecht, a gently winding river that shapes the surrounding countryside. Along the way, you pass several installations from the Kunstwegen route, a long-distance outdoor art project that adds a cultural element to the day. The terrain is varied but generally easy-going, with stretches of narrow paths and open views. Your destination is Hellendoorn, a small village set on the edge of forested areas and close to the Sallandse Heuvelrug National Park, offering a peaceful and nature-focused setting.

Meals:  B

Begin with a gentle climb and descent towards Nijverdal before riding into the Sallandse Heuvelrug, a vast heathland reserve known for its birdlife and open views. Rolling paths lead you across this natural landscape, with the option to visit the nature museum at Holterberg. Continuing south, you enter the historic Graafschap region, where wooded countryside and estates reflect its noble past. Passing landmarks including Huis Verwolde and quiet waterways, you finish in Vorden, a charming village famous for its surrounding castles and manor houses. The area is often referred to as “castle country”, with several estates set within wooded landscapes and farmland.

Meals:  B

Leaving Vorden, you cycle through a landscape of hedgerows, tree-lined lanes and small fields typical of the Achterhoek region. Along the way, you pass historic estates including Huis de Kiefskamp and Huis ’t Zelle, set within park-like surroundings. Continuing via Zelhem, the terrain gradually changes as the Montferland hills rise ahead. Your day ends in the village of Zeddam, at the foot of the Montferland hills. Known for its traditional windmill and relaxed atmosphere, it marks a transition towards more varied terrain.

Meals:  B

From Zeddam, you ride through the wooded Bergherbos before descending via Elten towards the Rhine lowlands of the Gelderse Poort. The route continues through wetland areas and nature reserves, with a short ferry crossing to Millingen aan de Rijn. Following quiet paths through the Millingerwaard and Ooyse Polder, you pass meadows, dykes and waterways before climbing the hills near Groesbeek. Here, the Canadian War Cemetery, the Liberation Museum, and a replica of an Allied glider at Klein Amerika serve as poignant reminders of the final days of World War II. Cycling through the beautiful Zevendal, you’ll descend into the Maas Valley, where just before the lively town of Gennep, you’ll encounter the ruins of the historic Genneperhuis, a former fortress located at the mouth of the Niers River into the Maas.

Meals:  B

Start your journey with a delightful bike ride through the Maasheggen region, the oldest cultural landscape in the Netherlands. Here, you’ll find a mosaic of meadows, ancient trees, and hedgerows, where the mayflower and blackthorn bloom abundantly in spring. Continue your ride past picturesque farming villages and through the forests of Landgoed Geijsteren, home to the secluded Willibrordus Chapel, a beloved pilgrimage site since the 17th and 18th centuries. You’ll also come across the pilgrimage town of Tienray, featuring a replica of the Lourdes grotto! After visiting the rose town of Lottum, a ferry will take you across to the other side of the Maas. Visit the Chapel of Our Lady of Genooi, the patron saint of nearby Venlo where you overnight. This evening stroll along the charming Maas Boulevard or through the historic city centre where a vibrant cafe culture exists.

Meals:  B

Begin by cycling over the Jammerdaalse Heide (“whining heath”), which is said to be named after the lamentations of Caesar's soldiers, who were defeated here by Ambiorix. The ancient clay pits with their steep banks create an eldorado for the rare natterjack toad and the sand martin. Next, you'll ride along the Prinsendijk, which not only serves as a geological boundary but was also once part of an ancient Roman military road and, in 1944, the German Maas-Roersstellung. After exploring the nature surrounding the meandering Swalm River, you'll reach the impressive Hillenraad Castle. A lovely, winding bike path takes you over the Melickerheide, part of the terrace landscape of National Park de Meinweg, featuring dry dunes and marshy wetlands. The day ends in Roermond, a historic town at the confluence of the Maas and Roer rivers. The town has an impressive cathedral, charming squares and waterfront setting, offering a relaxed yet atmospheric stop.

Meals:  B

Leaving Roermond, you follow the Roer Valley through a mix of riverside scenery and rural countryside. Along the way, you pass the village of Sint Odiliënberg, known for its distinctive church and elevated setting above the river. Continuing south, the route leads past Montfort, where the remains of a medieval castle sit within the landscape. Quiet roads and cycle paths guide you to Sittard, one of the oldest towns in the Netherlands, where historic buildings and former monasteries mark the end of your day.

Meals:  B

Your final ride takes you through the rolling green hills of Limburg, featuring fast-flowing streams, marl caves, limestone houses, and quaint chapels or crosses scattered throughout. The day begins with the challenge of climbing Kollenberg, the northernmost foothill of the Ardennes. A steep ascent with seven “footfalls” leads you to the highest point, where you’ll find the 17th-century Sint Rosakapelle. Stop at Castle Gerlach to admire the sculpture garden and enjoy a coffee at Burgemeester Quicx in the monastery courtyard. Between Rothem and Geulhem, you’ll cycle along the edge of the charming Geuldal. Ride along the brand-new “Groene Loper,” flanked by over two thousand linden trees, into the heart of Maastricht, home to more than 1,650 monuments. Head to Pieterberg, a plateau nestled between the valleys of the Maas and Jeker. Here, a panoramic viewpoint marks the end of your Pieterpad journey. Maastricht offers a charming mix of architecture, gastronomy and welcoming southern hospitality. A fitting end to your cycle.

Grading

introductory to moderate

GRADE 2 - Daily distances range from 42–77km (26–48mi) on mostly flat to gently undulating terrain, following quiet cycle paths and rural roads. This trip is well suited to cyclists with some experience who are comfortable riding moderate distances over consecutive days. While the terrain is not demanding, wind can play a part in the Netherlands — often described as “the mountains of the Netherlands” — and may occasionally make sections feel more challenging. A good level of fitness will help you get the most out of the trip and enjoy the journey at a comfortable pace. If you would prefer some extra support, electric bikes are available (must be pre-booked and a supplement applies). Please note that you still need to be a competent cyclist to ride an e-bike, as they are heavier and require confident handling, particularly when starting, stopping and manoeuvring. This is a great option if you’re new to self-guided cycling holidays and looking for an achievable and rewarding ride, without technical terrain.
