Arrive in Slovenia’s compact and charming capital, where elegant architecture, leafy riverside promenades and lively cafés create a welcoming introduction to the journey ahead. Spend time exploring the old town, visiting Ljubljana Castle or enjoying dinner beside the Ljubljanica River.

Meals:  Nil

Your first cycling day is a gentle ride across the vast Ljubljana Marshes (Ljubljansko Barje), a unique wetland landscape stretching across nearly 160 sq km / 62 sq mi. Quiet cycling paths and country roads lead through peaceful villages and open plains beneath the forested hills south of the capital. Along the way you can visit the remains of the once-impressive Borovnica railway viaduct, which was among the largest in Europe in the 19th century. Before reaching Vrhnika, there is also the opportunity to stop at the Technical Museum housed within Bistra Castle, home to a fascinating collection including former Yugoslav president Tito’s cars. +150m/492ft, -160m/525ft

Meals:  B

Today’s ride takes you away from the main tourist routes and into the quieter landscapes of rural Slovenia, following scenic backroads through forests, limestone terrain and small villages. Along the way, you may wish to take a short detour to the dramatic Predjama Castle, one of the country’s most remarkable landmarks, built directly into a cave mouth halfway up a 123m / 404ft cliff face. The castle is closely tied to the legend of the rebellious knight Erasmus of Predjama, who is said to have withstood a lengthy siege by secretly accessing supplies through the hidden cave network behind the fortress. According to local folklore, he even taunted his enemies by tossing fresh cherries down from the castle walls. A visit to the castle offers a fascinating insight into medieval life, regional legends and the unusual circumstances surrounding Erasmus’ eventual downfall. +760m /2493ft, -510m/1673ft

Meals:  B

Nearly 30 million visitors have explored the extraordinary underground world of Postojna Cave, one of Europe’s most celebrated karst cave systems. Carved deep beneath the limestone landscape over millions of years, the cave reveals a spectacular maze of vast chambers, tunnels and intricate rock formations. During the 1.5-hour guided tour, you’ll travel by train and then on foot through this subterranean wonderland past towering stalactites and stalagmites, while learning about the cave’s unique ecosystem and its most famous resident, the mysterious olm, often referred to as the cycle ride continues toward the first vineyards of the Vipava Valley, where Mediterranean influences begin to shape both the landscape and local culture. +240m/787ft, -630m/2067ft *Note - If you choose to visit just one cave on this trip, we recommend you visit on day 6 the UNESCO listed Škocjan Caves which are far less visited and absolutely a highlight. The guided tour takes you 3km along trails within the cave and lasts about 1.5 to 2 hours.

Meals:  B

Today’s ride leads to the historic Lipica Stud Farm, the birthplace of the renowned Lipizzaner horses. Famous for their gleaming white coats, strength and elegant movements, these horses have been bred here for more than 400 years and remain closely associated with the traditions of classical dressage. You may wish to visit the stables and grounds to learn more about the breed and the cultural heritage of this unique estate. Bookings required. https://www.lipica.org/en/tickets/ Along the way, there is also the opportunity to visit the fascinating War Museum, housed within an old Venetian tower. Its extensive collection offers an unexpected insight into the region’s military history and the complex past of this borderland area. +630m/2067ft, -360m/1181ft

Meals:  B

If you didn’t visit Postojna Cave earlier in the journey, this morning offers the chance to explore the remarkable Škocjan Caves, one of Slovenia’s most impressive natural wonders and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Less visited than Postojna yet equally captivating, the cave system features enormous underground chambers, dramatic limestone formations and one of the world’s largest subterranean canyons. From here, continue cycling toward the Adriatic coast and the charming seaside town of Muggia, just south of Trieste in Italy. After several rewarding days in the saddle, you may wish to take a boat across to Trieste to wander its elegant old town, enjoy a gelato in a lively piazza or simply relax beside the sea. +350m/1148ft, -780m/2559ft

Meals:  B

On your final day of cycling, follow the Adriatic coastline along a scenic cycling path built on a former railway line. The route offers sweeping views across the Gulf of Trieste and Slovenia’s small yet picturesque stretch of coastline, with sparkling sea vistas accompanying much of the ride. Along the way, consider stopping in the lively seaside resort of Portorož, known for its cafés, waterfront promenade and relaxed Mediterranean atmosphere. The journey concludes in the beautifully preserved Venetian harbour town of Piran, where narrow cobbled streets, historic architecture and a stunning waterfront setting provide a memorable finale to your Slovenian cycling adventure. +230m/755ft, -240m/787ft

Meals:  B

Your cycling adventure concludes in Piran after breakfast. Depending on your onward plans, you may wish to spend additional time exploring the Slovenian coast or nearby Trieste.

Grading

introductory to moderate

INTRODUCTORY TO MODERATE – GRADE 2 Daily cycles are between 32 and 50km/20 or 31.5mi over undulating terrain. The majority of the route is on quiet country roads, while 15% is on dedicated cycleways and 5% on main roads when approaching or leaving a city. 5% of the route is on unpaved surfaces. The total length of the cycle is 240km / 150mi with ascents between 150 and 760 metres (500 - 2500ft). The accent is on keeping a relaxed pace to take in all of the attractions, with time to stop and take photos. You will need a reasonable level of fitness to participate fully in this adventure. To prepare for your ride, we recommend cycling in light traffic in the lead up to your trip with some hills. An E bike or gravel bike can be requested (supplement applies). If you are using an E-bike it can make the trip easier on the legs, although pedalling is still required. Also you need to be a competent cyclist to ride an E bike as they are heavier and faster than regular bikes.
