Experience a short Scottish walking holiday that blends the drama of the Cairngorm Mountains with the quiet charm of the Speyside valley, home to more than 50 whisky distilleries including Aberlour, Macallan, Glenfiddich and Glenlivet. This trip offers a wonderful introduction to the Highlands: scenic walks on the Speyside Way, vintage rail travel, a private whisky tasting and the lively mountain town of Aviemore. Cairngorm is Britain’s largest national park, shaped by ancient pine forests, sparkling lochs and broad glens scoured by Ice Age glaciers. At its northern edge lies Aviemore, an outdoor hub with cafés, restaurants and shops, and a friendly energy that makes it the perfect starting point. From here you’ll walk one of the loveliest stretches of the Speyside Way, explore quiet upland landscapes and have the option to ascend Cairngorm Mountain itself or visit the Scottish Wildcat Centre and Highland Folk Museum.

The second part of your journey takes you into the heart of Speyside, the world’s most celebrated whisky region. Staying in the village of Craigellachie, your walk will take you via the famous Aberlour Distillery and the Speyside Cooperage, one of the last places still making traditional oak whisky barrels. Enjoy a private whisky tasting in the village and sample some local Speyside “uisge beatha”, the Gaelic name meaning water of life from which the English word whisky was derived. This is a holiday that combines gentle walking, rich Highland culture and the deep traditions of Scotland’s whisky country with comfortable and welcoming accommodation with local character, an ideal introduction to one of Britain’s most evocative landscapes.

Meals:  Nil

Travel in vintage style on the Strathspey Steam Railway from Aviemore to Boat of Garten (20 mins- fare payable locally), then walk the Speyside Way back to town. It’s a lovely route through stands of native Caledonian pine forest and open moorland with views of the River Spey and the surrounding mountains. The Speyside Way is one of Scotland’s Great Trails and the full route meanders from nearby Newtonmore all the way out to the coast on the Moray Firth at Buckie. This section is particularly lovely and a wonderful way to experience the unique landscape. As you return to Aviemore, the trail passes the Cairngorm Brewery at Dalfaber where you may wish to stop to sample the locally brewed ale.

There are several options for you to choose from today, or you can relax and wander around the town. We highly recommend the following excursions (all walk information and mapping will be provided in the Walkers’ Britain & Europe app). A) Cairngorm Mountain Funicular & Summit Walk (July–Aug only) – Take the bus to Cairngorm Mountain Station and ride the UK’s only mountain funicular railway to the summit. From here you can take part in a guided summit walk (July and August only) to enjoy the far-reaching views and learn about the natural environment. This is not included in the price but we can book it for you – talk to our team when you book. B) Walk in the Rothiemurchus Forest Estate – Enjoy a classic short lochside circuit at beautiful Loch an Eilein or hike to the Green Loch and Ryvoan Bothy. Both accessible by local bus from Aviemore. C) Newtonmore & the Wildcat Trail – Take the train (15 mins) to nearby Newtonmore to visit the award-winning Highland Folk Museum and learn about the Scottish Wildcat conservation project. Take the 10km/6 miles “Wildcat Trail” to enjoy fabulous views of the Cairngorm and Monadhliath mountain ranges.

Meals:  B

A morning private transfer at 9.30am (45 mins) transports you and your luggage along the valley of the River Spey to Craigellachie in the heart of Speyside whisky country. Arrive at your comfortable hotel and take a walk into the village to explore on foot. Today we will organise a private whisky tasting for you – visit the tasting room at the Speyside Whisky Shop where an experienced member of the team will guide you through a selection of five Speyside drams. With over 100 whiskies to choose from, you can be assured that you will find something to your taste! Explore the village on foot and relax over dinner at the hotel. Accommodation: Two nights in a charming Victorian lodge set in the heart of Speyside whisky country. Rooms are elegant and comfortable, with period features that reflect the building’s heritage. The hotel offers warm hospitality, peaceful grounds and an inviting atmosphere after a day on the Speyside Way.

Meals:  B

Walk a beautiful stretch of the Speyside Way south to Aberlour, where you can tour the distillery and learn about the craft behind this renowned whisky. Continue on to the Speyside Cooperage, the only place in Scotland still making traditional oak barrels to see the cooper craftsmen in action. You may also choose to visit the distillery at Macallan, also on the hiking route (tours must be booked in advance), or simply enjoy the tranquility of Scottish Speyside. Toast the end of your trip with a wee dram at your hotel before dinner!

Meals:  B

Tour arrangements end after breakfast. You can spend further time exploring the area (ask our team about adding an extra night). Transfer to Elgin (local bus – 30 mins) or by taxi to pick up trains to Inverness or south to Edinburgh/Glasgow. Inverness Airport also close.

Grading

introductory to moderate

This trip is graded ‘Introductory to Moderate’ and is well suited to anyone with a reasonable level of fitness and a love of being outdoors. The Speyside Way, and the optional walks on day 3 follow well-maintained paths, forest tracks and riverside trails, with gentle gradients and clear route finding throughout. Daily walks are generally short to moderate in length, leaving plenty of time to enjoy the scenery, visit distilleries and explore local villages. While some sections include uneven ground and occasional ascents, no technical walking experience is required, making this an excellent introduction to long-distance walking in Scotland.

You will explore one of Scotland’s most beautiful regions on foot, following hand-picked sections of the Speyside Way and upland trails near the Cairngorms – all with the flexibility to walk at your own pace. What sets it apart is the variety and balance: vintage train travel, a private Speyside whisky tasting, visits to distilleries and cooperages, and the chance to walk through native Caledonian pine forest and the Spey valley which is steeped in history. You will stay in welcoming, characterful inns in both Aviemore and Craigellachie, where Highland hospitality, hearty breakfasts and peaceful settings elevate your experience after a day on the trail. With options to visit the Cairngorm Mountain summit or the Scottish Wildcat Centre, and easy rail access from Edinburgh, Glasgow or Inverness, this is a relaxed yet rewarding holiday for walkers who value nature, culture and comfort in equal measure.

Aviemore is well connected by train, with regular services from Edinburgh, Glasgow and Inverness. A wonderful way to travel here by train from London would be to take the Caledonian Sleeper Train - the train leaves London Euston in the evening and arrives at Aviemore for breakfast. With a range of beautifully appointed carriages to choose from this would really add to your travel experience. At the end of the trip, you can take a local bus to Elgin (25 mins) or a taxi to catch onward trains south or to Inverness where there is also an Airport. We provide full travel notes to make your journey easy.

This trip is graded Introductory to Moderate and is suitable for anyone with a reasonable level of fitness who enjoys walking. You’ll typically walk 3–5 hours a day, mainly on well-marked trails and gentle gradients. We provide full route notes and GPX files through the easy-to-use Walkers’ Britain & Europe navigation app.

Yes – a private whisky tasting in Craigellachie is included, with a curated selection of Speyside single malts. You will learn more about the history and process of producing whisky in Speyside where there are more than 50 distilleries! Your walk on the Speyside Way from Craigellachie will take you via the Aberlour Distillery and the Macallan Distillery and Visitor Centre - if you would like to take a distillery visit and tasting, we strongly suggest you book in advance via the distillery websites. Your route will also pass by the Speyside Cooperage, the last remaining cooperage in Scotland making barrels specifically for the whisky industry and is well worth a visit to learn more about the history of coopers in Scotland.

Absolutely. If you’d like to spend more time in Aviemore, explore more distilleries or extend your walking in Speyside, just let us know. Our team can help tailor your trip with extra nights and offer advice on the optional experiences like the Cairngorm Summit walk, visit to the Highland Folk Museum or the Scottish Wildcat project for your day of exploration on day 2.

Yes, solo travellers are very welcome on this trip. We’ll book single rooms where requested (solo traveller supplement applies), and the friendly atmosphere of Aviemore and Speyside make it a great choice for independent walkers who enjoy scenic trails, local culture and whisky heritage.
