The trip begins in the elegant town of Nevers, nestled in the heart of France and rich in character and history. The barge is moored on the outskirts of town in Embranchement de Nevers, Chemin de Halage. You should arrive at the barge between 2 - 3 PM. When you arrive on board, you can settle in and enjoy a cup of coffee or tea. It is also a good moment to become acquainted with the tour leader, skipper and crew and of course your fellow passengers. During dinner aboard the ship, the program for the next day and how the week will work are discussed. Instructions on cycling and safely procedures will also be given and you will be able to take your bike for a test ride after dinner. You may also have the opportunity for an evening walk through the old town of Nevers. The winding medieval streets reveal houses dating back to the 14th–17th centuries, each one with its own story to tell. Nevers’ roots stretch back to Roman times, and since the 5th century it has been the seat of a bishop, giving the town its spiritual and architectural weight. Highlights include the Palais Ducal, a Renaissance-era ducal palace, and several beautifully preserved Romanesque and Gothic churches, including the Cathedral of Saint Cyr and Sainte Julitte.

We begin the week in the heart of France with a short cycle from the historic town of Nevers. The ride takes us to Le Guétin, near the village of Cuffy, where the Canal latéral à la Loire meets the Allier River. This quiet hamlet is known for the impressive Pont Canal du Guétin – a 470-metre (1,542-foot) aqueduct that carries the canal high above the river. Continue on to Cours-les-Barres, a peaceful location to end the day, surrounded by nature and rural tranquillity, offering a gentle start to your cycling holiday.

Meals:  B,L,D

This morning we visit the striking canal aqueduct over the Allier River, complete with two impressive locks, each around 9 metres (30 feet) high – an engineering highlight of the day. From here, you’ll cycle north through peaceful woodlands and past charming villages and country estates en route to Beffes.

Meals:  B,L,D

After breakfast, you’ll set off on your bikes for a scenic ride through the Pouilly-Fumé wine region, known for its crisp Sauvignon Blancs and rolling vineyard landscapes. The route leads you to the historic town of La Charité-sur-Loire, once an important stop on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela. As you cross the elegant 16th-century stone bridge into the old centre, enjoy sweeping views of the town and the striking Notre Dame church, a listed UNESCO World Heritage Site. From here, the journey continues to Sancerre, your destination for the day – the Sancerre region beneath the hilltop town famous for its wine, charm, and panoramic views across the Loire Valley.

Meals:  B,L,D

Today’s ride takes you through one of France’s most celebrated wine regions — Sancerre, world-renowned for its crisp and elegant white wines, particularly Sauvignon Blanc. Winegrowing here dates back as far as the 6th century, and while Pinot Noir was once the dominant grape, a devastating 19th-century vine disease led to the rise of Sauvignon — a change that has since defined the region’s global reputation. You’ll cycle a picturesque route through rolling vineyards, charming stone villages and gently winding roads. In Ménétréol-sous-Sancerre, nestled just below the vineyards, you’ll have the chance to taste local wines — a moment to pause and appreciate the land’s deep connection to its produce. After your tasting, enjoy a relaxed return ride through the vines, where every turn offers views as rewarding as the wines themselves, before arriving back to the Clair de Lune.

Meals:  B,L,D

Today’s ride to Briare takes you through classic French countryside, with gentle rolling hills, rural estates, and quiet villages that reflect the pace of local life. Along the way, you’ll pass the historic locks at Châtillon-sur-Loire, a reminder of the region’s long-standing connection to canal travel. Continue on to St. Brisson, where the imposing medieval château stands watch over the surrounding landscape. The day ends on a high note with a visit to the magnificent Briare Aqueduct, an architectural masterpiece that carries the canal over the Loire River. You'll spend the next two nights moored in Briare, a charming small town that offers a relaxed and authentic French atmosphere – the perfect spot to wind down your journey.

Meals:  B,L,D

Your final day of cycling begins with a gentle ride through the French countryside to the charming Pont Chevron castle, set beside a tranquil lake and framed by woodland. It's a scenic and peaceful start to your journey, withtime to stop for photos and soak in the atmosphere. By midday, you’ll reach Rogny-les-Sept-Écluses, a village famed for its remarkable 17th-century seven locks – an impressive feat of engineering and a favourite among history lovers. This is a great spot to enjoy lunch. In the afternoon, pedal past the elegant 16th-century Château de Bléneau, and cycle through a region dotted with lakes and quiet forests. The route takes you through Ouzouer-sur-Trézée, a traditional village that offers a glimpse into rural life in the Loiret region, before looping back to Briare, where your barge awaits.

Meals:  B,L,D

After breakfast the trip concludes with disembarkation by 10am.
